Youth gifted a framed letter to the Indian Environment Minister

Copenhagen, December 11, 2009

Miss Alina Pokhrel from NYCA on behalf of South Asian Youth gifted a framed letter to the Indian Environment Minister Mr. Jairam Ramesh to express “deep concern” on his statement “there is no conclusive scientific evidence to link global warming and Himalayan glaciers and neither to link the black carbon in the atmosphere with the glaciers”.

The letter was handed over in a press conference organized by the Indian minister in Bella Center, Copenhagen on 11 December.

After hearing the concern from the youth, Jairam Ramesh tried to clarify his position by pointing to what he argues to be inconclusive evidences produced by Indian scientists. The Minister said that Indian scientists have been carrying out research for the past fifty years and are yet to establish a clear link between climate change and glacial melting.

The minister was greeted by youth protesters showing signs saying “No Dirty Politics” asking the minister to acknowledge the impacts on glaciers. One of the protesters remarked, “Survival is at stake, we don’t want climate change to be overtaken by India’s foreign policy agendas.”

NYCA on behalf of the South Asian youth has also submitted a letter to Mr. Anshuman Gaur, first secretary (Political) of Embassy of India in Nepal , on 24 November.
